Fushugi Yuugi-The Mysterious Play
Sam: You sure that you want to watch this?
Samantha: Heck yeah. Waited years to watch it after seeing the ova. Plus I can now watch it for free and not pay globs of money for the blue and red box sets.
Sam: You make a good point. Sure lets do this.
Sammi: Sqwee! Anime watching. *munches something*
Let me start with this is a really soapy series. What I mean by that is it has alot of elements found in a soap opera. I was not expecting that, had it in my head that it would more story driven. With less character drama.
I was wrong about that. That same character drama is what almost made me give up on this series. Let me give you some background. I had purchased the OVA dvd's way back in the early 2000's. This was when I was just starting to find anime to watch. Prior to that I would read about older anime that I hadn't seen. Or purchase copies of Newtype and Animage to get an idea of what was what.
Fushigi Yuugi is a shojo anime, though not in the magical girl sense.Think more along the lines of girl travels to the past and is a priestess.
Yeah, though for me it was an average anime experience. Nothing that changed my views or that I felt changed up the anime business.
The main character bothered me, for her helplessness and durping. Though it is those same qualities that redeem her as well. For yeah there is alot of stuff that could have been avoided if she would have been more aware and a bit proactive.
Thinking about it more, I realized that it was that she was not meant to be this heroic girl or priestess. She was meant to be seen as this normal Japanese student.
Feeble antics of the other characters do make up for some of the short comings in the story. Take the cross dressing character and the lead having fights over one of the many guys in the priestesses group.
It is with this that you find yourself wanting to know what is going to happen to everyone. There is more that I want to say. Yet that would spoil a few things.
So until next time.
I'll be watching something.
